1908-S $10 Indian. With motto. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely golden toning and well struck. Very pretty coin! Bright orange-gold with warm accents on the highlights. A satiny gem that boast an endless amount of luster and physical strength. The characteristic San Francisco mint strike is bold, which is very positive for a low mintage date that collectors find difficult to obtain in any Uncirculated grade. Don't expect the usual halfhearted impression left by the striking of the sometimes worn dies that made this piece. We are glad to report the opposite is true. This is a very bold coin with sharp feathers in the stylized war bonnet as well as on the eagle's wings. Your acquaintance with this piece, once you spend a little time with it, will ripen, and you may find yourself reaching for your checkbook to make sure you've funds enough for the inevitable bidding tussle that will arise when it is time to be auctioned. Only the faintest trace of rub on the high points of the design. It is the mintage that'll cause bidders to sit up and take notice, since 1911-D has the lowest coinage total in the later series (not counting the 500 1907 Wire Edge pieces and 42 Rolled Edge coins). 1911-S $10 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Scarce date in Mint State. A satiny golden coin with strong luster on choice matte-like surfaces. What gladdens us more than usual is to see a crisp rather than a dullish, smooth impression was left by the pressure of the dies that struck this sharp '11-S specimen. One of the low mintage issues, only 51,000 left the dies at San Francisco that year. Although we can only imagine it now, we expect there will be a look of mingled joy and awe in the eyes of the next owner of this handsome piece, knowing the coin's value and rarity in high grade. 1926 $10 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice golden colors. A few light marks on the cheek. Outstanding bright color beams across radiant surfaces on this later issue Indian ten. Production ceased after 1920. There was a large issue (heavily melted) in 1926 and again in 1932, with a smaller amount (now very rare) in 1933.

Some comparisons of everyday prices back when this gold coin was current may be enlightening: at Hotel La Salle in 1925-6, "Chicago's Finest Hotel," a single room ranged from $2.50 to $7.00 per night. Breakfast at the hotel was 50c to 70c; lunch, 85c; dinner, $1.25, and Sunday dinner, $1.50. A hand-tailored, silk-lined tuxedo was $35. Toy electric train sets began at $5.75. A new gas range was $27.35. Smoked beef tongue was 29c a pound; flour $1.25 for a 24-1/2 pound bag; apples 49c for a box of a dozen. The fare to Bermuda from New York and back by ship was $70 (or seven of these $10 gold pieces). This price included the berth and meals. A new Hudson car cost $1,250 or a little more than 60 ounces of gold, which equates in today's mini-dollar of $580+ gold to a whole lot more. In fact, multiply all of the above figures by 20 to 25 times to factor in the price rise of the last 80 years and you get a feel for the actual buying power of gold money like this 1926 $10 Indian (PCGS # 8882) .
